Sony's 130 Platinum Wireless PS4 headset comes out in January
15 December 2016, 8:49 am

Sony's 130 Platinum Wireless Headset comes out in Europe on 16th January 2017.

The high-end gaming headset includes 7.1 virtual surround-sound fuelled by PlayStation's proprietary 3D audio tech. The 3D audio tech is lifted from PSVR games, so effects sound like they're coming from all directions, including above and below. In Uncharted 4, for example, you'll hear characters call Nathan Drake from downstairs.

There's a pair of 50mm speaker drivers, multi-position, noise-cancelling microphones and a built-in rechargeable battery.

No Man's Sky patch ads epic space battles
14 December 2016, 8:06 pm

No Man's Sky just received a new patch on PC and PS4 that will make space battles vary in size.

"Players should see bigger battles," developer Hello Games noted in its patch notes.

The update also fixes numerous bugs, like the recurring death loop that would happen if the game autosaved in Survival Mode when the player is about to run out of health.

Time Commanders is back on the telly, tonight at 9pm
12 December 2016, 3:12 pm

Time Commanders, a TV show built around the Total War series of strategy games, is back for its third series after more than a decade off the box.

If you're in the UK, you can catch it from 9pm this evening on BBC Four. Apparently the first episode features a team of board game enthusiasts going up against a group of actual wrestlers. I mean, whatever happens, that'll be an excellent visual.

Each team will be split into various roles (typically one general and two captains) as they fight their way through some big, historical battle, using the Total War engine. The episode then concludes with a head-to-head battle between the two. My money's on the wrestlers.

There's more to Destiny's December Dawning update than just Sparrow racing
5 December 2016, 11:06 am

Destiny's December update has a pleasing array of new features in store - as well as the expected return of Sparrow racing.

My favourite? Tower stalwarts Cayde (yep, Nathan Fillion), Zavala and Ikora are back after their absence in September's main Rise of Iron campaign.

You'll hear them chatter over the latest Strikes to get revamped (The Nexus, The Will of Crota and The Shadow Thief).

Ellie is the lead character in The Last of Us Part 2
3 December 2016, 10:22 pm

Ellie will be the lead playable character in The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog has revealed in a panel session at this year's PlayStation Experience.

Neil Druckmann took to the stage with Troy Baker - who plays the returning Joel, the main playable character in the first game - and Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie.

Details were understandably thin for a game that's not due out for a while - and the trailer was intended for next year's E3 but Naughty Dog elected to show it at this year's PlayStation Experience - but Druckmann did give a broad view of what to expect.

PlayStation Plus' December Instant Game Collection lets subscribers snag Klei's turn-based infiltration game Invisible, Inc. for free beginning on 6th December.

We were big fans of Invisible, Inc. where we rated it the our 7th favourite game of last year.

Also included in the December PS Plus line-up for PS4 is Stories: The Path of Destinies, a choose-your-own-adventure style isometric fantasy action game about anthropomorphised animals.

Today's the historic day Eve Online goes free
15 November 2016, 4:00 pm

Have you ever wanted to try Eve Online but stopped yourself because there's a subscription fee and actually it looks a bit complicated anyway?

Or did you used to play Eve Online but stopped yourself because you only want to dip in and out and can't justify the subscription fee?

However you look at it, today's a historic day for Eve Online. Today's the day this iconic online space world offers a permanent way to play for free for the first time in 13 years - and a new New Player Experience with it. Eve Online isn't suddenly free-to-play and there aren't suddenly new microtransactions, nothing like that, but there's a fundamental shift occurring that could alter the game's course for good.

Watch Sony's fancy pants PS4 advert
14 November 2016, 8:20 am

John Lewis and M&S eat your hearts out. Sony's released a fancy new PlayStation 4 advert just in time for Christmas - and it's packed with video game references.

The ad stars the King, who is so bored by his medieval existence that he goes on a video game-inspired imaginary journey.

I spot references to Destiny and Street Fighter 5, as well as scenes set in upcoming PS4 games Horizon: Zero Dawn, Spider-Man and God of War.

Call of Duty's PlayStation VR bonus is free for everyone
4 November 2016, 4:53 pm

Call of Duty's new PlayStation VR demo, the Jackal Assault VR Experience, doesn't actually require owning Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in order to play.

Instead, it's a free demo for everyone with Sony's new headset. "The Jackal Assault VR Experience will be available to all PS4 owners, not just for players who have purchased the game, as a free, added bonus," Activision stated on the Call of Duty blog.

In order to try the demo, simply download it from the PlayStation Store. It will be under the VR section with the full title Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - Jackal Assault VR Experience.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has a YOLO mode
3 November 2016, 9:33 am

This year's Call of Duty has a YOLO mode.

Infinite Warfare's YOLO mode does exactly what it says on the tin: you only live once. That's right, permadeath. If you die you have to start the campaign all over again from the beginning.

To unlock YOLO mode, you have to first complete the campaign on Specialist mode. Activision describes Specialist Mode as "intensely realistic", and by that it means it's rock hard.
