Jack Tretton: Sony “Held Back” PS4 Manufacturing to Ensure Stock After November 15th
21 November 2013, 9:55 pm

With the PlayStation 4 selling 1 million units back on November 15th in the United States and Canada, it left stores in the US will little to no stock, and completely cleared out all Canadian retailers.

In order to make sure that gamers are able to safely walk into a store and buy a PlayStation 4, Jack Tretton revealed to Forbes how they’ve held back manufacturing on PS4s to meet demand following the initial launch:

The thing that we’ve really made an effort to do, and I think the retailers have as well, is we could’ve pre-sold every unit we could manufacture and it would be a great event for November 15th, but nobody would bother coming to the stores if they hadn’t presold one. So retailers have held back quantities. We’ve held back manufacturing to make it available on subsequent days after November 15th. So my hope is that anybody who wants one before Christmas has an opportunity to get one.
When it comes to PS4 demand, Tretton believes they’ll be “chasing” it, “But I do think the supplies are gonna be great. And in terms of numbers, greater than any launch we’ve ever had in the past.”

During a recent Best Buy earnings call (via Seeking Alpha), CEO Hubert Joly revealed how they were expecting new PS4 stock next week, and the margins on the systems aren’t great:

[...] The quantities, Sony has reported, right, to 1 million units shipped and which is much faster than the PS3. So that’s very encouraging. We… Best Buy tends to do well in hardware even though, as Sharon has highlighted, the margins are not as exciting as the volumes, but that is very good. And we’ll get more inventory next week… We have the plan to keep some of that inventory for our best customers.

Shuhei Yoshida: Dark Souls & Demon’s Souls Inspired the PS4?s System Features
21 November 2013, 9:04 pm

After being very democratic and calling a tie between Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls in his top 10 games of the generation list, Shuhei Yoshida went into detail to explain his choices.

In the process, he dropped a very interesting tidbit about how the games inspired the PS4:

Lots of things these games – Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls – did, like leaving the message to other people asynchronously, so you feel connected, but not really connected at the same time, all of these things inspired us when we were designing the system features for PS4.
He then elaborated:

Like sharing features. I enjoy so much watching people play Dark Souls on YouTube. These games still have a special place in my memory.
Did you get a feeling that Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls had given some inspiration to Sony when making the PS4? Let us know in the comments below.

GameStop: PS4 Demand to Outstrip Supply “For Months”, 2.3 Million People on PS4?s First to Know List
21 November 2013, 7:38 pm

Shortly after GameStop released their financial results for the third quarter, they held a conference call to discuss a myriad of topics.

One of them had to do with the PS4, as President Tony Bartel explained:

In addition to selling through all of our reservations, and some additional allocation that we’ve received from Sony, we still have over 2.3 million customers on the First to Know list, which indicates continued demand for months to come.

Also, a survey of our Power-Up Reward members shows that 2/3 of those surveyed expect to own a PS4 or Xbox One in the next 12 months. According to our Power-Up Rewards customers, the #1 concern around the console launch is affordability.
While they wouldn’t release specific PS4 numbers due to competitive reasons, Tony later added:

Our share was higher than on any previous console launch, and our sell-through since launch was 80% higher than the total amount of PS3′s that we sold in our 2006 fiscal year.
Also, with Sony announcing that they expect to sell 3 million PS4s in North America by the end of 2013 (they’re well on the way), Raines says they “expect to sell a large portion of that.”

Raines then went on to talk about how, while other retailers expect “significant price discounting” this holiday, he believes it will affect them minimally on next-gen consoles. One of the reasons why is follows:

We believe that demand for the new consoles will outstrip supply for the months to come. So we do not expect price discounting on the new platforms.
A couple other points were made during the call by executives:

  • GameStop sold 52% of all PS3 and Xbox 360 software during the third quarter.
  • During the third quarter, their software attach rate was 2.2 times greater than the competition.

“Huge Percentage” of PS4 Owners Have Played Killzone: Shadow Fall
21 November 2013, 6:54 pm

We already know that Call of Duty: Ghosts has taken the cake as the #1 selling PS4 game at major retailers, an average of three games were bought with each PS4, and 1 in 3 PS4 games sold was from EA. When it came to Sony’s first-party titles, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack, we only knew that they had both done well in Canada.

While it’s far from an actual number, Guerrilla Games revealed today that Killzone: Shadow Fall was played by a “huge percentage” of PS4 owners in North America, with “well over” 3500 custom Warzones having been created so far. As Guerrilla is tailoring Shadow Fall based on your feedback, if there’s something you’d like to see changed, head over to the game’s website and click ‘Feedback’.

The developers took a moment to thank the fans, while also talking about how popular it’s been on streams:

One thing we’ve already learned is that you guys love to broadcast our game from the TwitchTV PS4 app. Shadow Fall continues to be one of if not the most streamed games using the PS4 app. At the same time, tens of thousands of PSN members have used the spectate functionality on their PlayStation 4 to watch a Killzone Shadow Fall stream.

The response from our North American players has been phenomenal so far, and we’re very grateful for that. For those of you in Europe, stay tuned for next week’s launch alongside the PS4! We hope that you’ll enjoy Killzone Shadow Fall and bear with us while we continue to improve and expand the experience. We are working on our first updates as we speak, so please keep an eye on and continue to put forward your suggestions. A big Thank You from all of us at Guerrilla!
Have you bought Killzone: Shadow Fall yet? Do you plan on buying it with your PS4 on November 29th? Let us know in the comments below.

EU PSN Resets “Small Number” of Users Passwords as a “Precautionary Measure”
21 November 2013, 4:05 pm

Purely as a “precautionary measure,” passwords on the European PSN have been reset, causing you to choose a new password. If you were one of the “small number” of people affected by this, but can’t confirm your Date of Birth or access the sign in ID email, contact PlayStation Support in your region for help.

The full statement regarding this password reset comes via SuperFastZombie on the PlayStation Forums:

We monitor PSN account for any irregular activity. If such activity is detected we will sometimes reset passwords.

This was done purely as precautionary measure and there was no specific evidence that any accounts had be compromised. Only a small number of users were affected by this and as I said this was precautionary so there is nothing specific to worry about.

I can’t provide any further details as this would affect out ability to keep you guys safe.

If anyone has any concerns about there PSN account drop me a PM or give PlayStation Support a call. You should also contact Support if you are unable to reset your password for any reason.
