Rocket League players have to break through the floor in Dropshot mode
13 March 2017, 3:39 pm

Rocket League gets a new mode next week: Dropshot.

In Dropshot, players have to break through the floor of the arena to score. It takes place in a new hexagonal arena known as Core 707. The regular goals are ditched in this stadium, so you have to create your open scoring area by using an electrified ball to break and eventually open the floor on your opponent's side.

The video, below, gives you an idea of how it works.

EA details Battlefield 1's next big expansions
28 February 2017, 8:31 pm

Battlefield 1's Season Pass has been detailed, some four months since EA started selling it for 39.99, with the four expansions bringing 16 new maps and 20 new weapons to DICE's shooter.

The first, We Shall Not Pass, has been thinly detailed before, introduces the French army and encounters in Verdun, a tank assault on the banks of the Aisne river as well as the more enclosed backdrop of Fort de Vaux.

Next up will be In the Name of the Tsar, which will bring the Russian army into the fray. It's a snow-themed expansion, and will be followed by Turning Tides which will have its focus on naval warfare. Finally there's Apocalypse, which will explore some of the war's most infamous battles.

Rocket League 4K PlayStation Pro support arrives
21 February 2017, 4:30 pm

The Rocket League update enabling 4K, 60 frames per second support on PlayStation 4 Pro should be live now.

The update also boosts standard PS4 performance to 1080p60 across all Rocket League arenas in single and split-screen play. Most arenas achieve 60fps in up to four-player split-screen play too, apparently.

Digital Foundry ran a Rocket League PS4 vs. Xbox One Face-Off last week and found PS4 hitting 60fps fairly consistently - a marked improvement over the game's performance when it launched.

14 February 2017, 4:26 pm

Battlefield 1's incoming winter update will be introducing a new way to earn XP, with ribbons being awarded for in-game feats.

Destiny 2 launches autumn, will be "more accessible to casual players"
10 February 2017, 10:04 am

Destiny 2 will launch this autumn and place a focus on accommodating new or lapsed players into the franchise.

But, speaking to investors last night, publisher Activision assured that this would not come at the cost of alienating existing fans.

"The cornerstone of that is a great cinematic story," Activision exec Eric Hirshberg said. "That's been a real focus with a great cast of memorable, relatable characters, coupled with some very nice ways to make the game more accessible to a casual player, without losing anything that our core players love.

Call of Duty will "return to its roots" after Infinite Warfare sales disappoint
9 February 2017, 10:59 pm

Don't expect another space-set Call of Duty for a long time - Activision has at last admitted what was clear all along - fans did not like last year's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Game sales were down year-on-year and revenue was down too - despite the allure of Modern Warfare Remastered if you stumped up the cash for Infinite Warfare's pricier editions.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's space setting "didn't resonate" with fans, Activision exec Eric Hirshberg admitted to investors this evening during a just-finished financial call. The result? "It wasn't success we planned."

PS4 Pro 'boost mode' runs unpatched PS4 games more smoothly
3 February 2017, 7:54 pm

UPDATE 3/2/17 7:52pm: Since publishing this story, the 4.5 system software update has started to roll out in volume to beta testers, and we can fully confirm that boost mode is indeed a real feature coming to PlayStation 4 Pro users. Digital Foundry will be putting this feature through its paces as soon as possible. In the meantime, here's a look at the option as it appears on the English version of the firmware.

Original story: Sony has revealed new details for its new system software 4.5 update, including long-awaited support for external hard drives, but if reports online are to be believed, it seems that the new firmware also adds 'boost mode' support to PlayStation 4 Pro, allowing non-patched standard PS4 games to tap into the power of the new hardware.

The news comes via a screenshot we first saw on NeoGAF, reproduced below, which appears to originate from a Japanese version of the 4.5 beta. The relevant text, along with a translation provided by DF staffer John Linneman is below:
