PlayStation VR getting updated headset
2 October 2017, 10:12 am

Sony has announced a hardware update for PlayStation VR is in the works.

The updated PlayStation VR model will include a new design, packaging and an improved processor unit.

"The new version, model number CUH-ZVR2, features an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable," said Sony. "There's also an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system. This function can be used only when the VR headset is turned off."

Here's the first Red Dead Redemption 2 story trailer
28 September 2017, 4:07 pm

Rockstar's released a new trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 - and it reveals story information.

The game tells the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as, according to the official blurb, "they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive". That confirms Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel, then - you put Dutch Van der Linde's gang down in Red Dead Redemption 1.

The video, which Sony said was captured on PlayStation 4, is heavy on cutscene and light on gameplay. There's plenty of era-appropriate dialogue, some impressive face animation and gorgeous environments.

Call of Duty: WW2's new story trailer reiterates that war is hell
18 September 2017, 8:01 pm

Call of Duty: WW2 has unleashed a new trailer highlighting its single-player story campaign.

Unlike Bethesda's jollier Nazi-slaying Wolfenstein series, Call of Duty: WW2 looks to remain historically accurate with no shortage of gruesome imagery. While not explicitly revealed, this trailer seems to tease a stage set around a concentration camp with one character interrogated by a Nazi commander before being forced onto a train. Of course, there's a chance this soldier could be saved before it comes to that as another character proclaims: "let's take that bridge and find our boy!"

While we're not sure how deep this historical atrocity rabbit hole Activision's shooter will tread, we know that its campaign will include swastikas and other Nazi iconography, but only in its single-player story mode.

Call of Duty: WW2 is getting an open beta on PC this month
15 September 2017, 1:14 am

Call of Duty: WW2 is getting an open beta on PC via Steam from 29th September through 2nd October.

Unlike the console beta that occurred earlier this month, this will be available to everyone - not just those who pre-ordered the game.

Developer Sledgehammer Games said that part of the reason for its openness is because it wants to "Stress test core gameplay systems and online backend infrastructure at scale."

How Call of Duty: WW2's new play of the game works
1 September 2017, 11:30 am

If you've been playing the Call of duty: WW2 multiplayer beta (check out Edwin's impressions here), you'll have noticed the new Overwatch play of the game-style feature that displays at the end of a match.

Developer Sledgehammer Games has ditched the final kill replay that traditionally ends a Call of Duty match and replaced it with a basic play of the game replay. (Check it out in the video below, from the seven minutes, 25 seconds mark.)

We'd seen this final medal, dubbed a Bronze Star, given to players performing various actions, but we weren't sure exactly how it worked. So we checked in with Sledgehammer for an explanation, and co-founder Michael Condrey replied saying it's all about "top performance", regardless of the winning faction.

Sony will give PlayStation VR title Rigs to all PlayStation Plus members as a bonus game.

From 5th September, PS Plus members can download the first-person arena-based shooter.

In a note to press, Sony said in the SIEE region (or the PAL region), nearly two-thirds of PS VR owners are PlayStation Plus members. The Rigs bonus offer is in addition to the new PlayLink social party game That's You, which has been available as a bonus title for Plus members.

The Call of Duty: WW2 beta is free on Hong Kong PSN
24 August 2017, 2:37 pm

The Call of Duty: WW2 beta is free to download from the Hong Kong PlayStation Store - unlike in the UK where it's only available for those who pre-order. We've tested it, it works. All you need to do to is sign up for a Hong Kong PlayStation Network account, which takes two minutes.

Twitter user Moriarty spotted the free download and posted a screenshot of the listing, which shows the "Call of Duty: WW2 Early Access Beta (English Version)" with a "try free demo" button beside it.

"Beta participants will experience the all-new War Mode where players compete against each other in objective-based, team gameplay," reads the PlayStation Store description.

Switch Rocket League getting exclusive Mario, Luigi, Samus cars
23 August 2017, 4:00 pm

The Switch version of Rocket League will have exclusive Mario, Luigi and Samus cars when it arrives this autumn.

The Mario and Luigi cars are identical but for a different predominant colour and logo.  Which one you get depends on the Rocket League team you're on. Mario is for the Orange team, Luigi for the Blue.

Infinitely cooler is the Samus Gunship car inspired by the Metroid series of games. It looks like a cross between a Lamborghini and something out of Tron, all lowered and metallic and fierce, with glowing neon green wheels. Again, there's a different car colouring for each Rocket League team.

See Call of Duty: WW2's Headquarters social hub in action
22 August 2017, 7:33 pm

Call of Duty: WW2's previously teased 48-player multiplayer social hub has been detailed in a brand new trailer.

Set on the beach of Normandy, this military mingling map has a variety of activities to engage in. You can try your hand at the firing range, man anti-air defenses, compete in a 1v1 firing pit, or watch live matches in a theater. As with other multiplayer modes, you'll be able to earn XP and rewards as you engage in various Headquarters challenges.

Our Wesley Yin-Poole interviewed developer Sledgehammer Games' co-founder Michael Condrey about CoD: WW2's Headquarters at E3 earlier this year. The developer likened the massively multiplayer map to that of World of Warcraft's Orgrimmar. It seemed to get Wes excited as he called Headquarters "a genuinely new and interesting feature for the long-running Call of Duty series."

Battlefield 1 reveals new in-development 5v5 Incursion mode
21 August 2017, 6:43 pm

A five-versus-five mode is finally coming to Battlefield 1. Incursion, as it's known, goes into closed alpha next month and you can register for it on the Battlefield 1 website now. The alpha is for Origin on PC only.

Incursion will be fast and intense, on smaller maps but still with a mix of vehicles to play with - a light tank and armoured car were seen in a debut gameplay video.

Scoring has been changed for Incursion because points will presumably be tighter but there's no specific detail beyond that. You'll be able to choose your kit before Incursion matches begin, which EA DICE hopes will add a level of strategy as players compliment each other.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 reveals first footage of space battles
19 August 2017, 12:15 am

Star Wars Battlefront 2's space battles have been shown for the first time in a leaked promo.

As you can see, aerial battles will be set in both deep space and along the surface of many planets. Unfortunately this isn't actual gameplay footage, but rather simply in-engine. Still, it should capture the general look of Battlefront 2's dogfighting. It also has Yoda unleashing his hidden power as a badass fighter pilot.

Space battles are being developed by Criterion, the Burnout developer that put together Battlefront's Rogue One VR mission - something our Martin Robinson called "the best demo for VR yet."

Call of Duty: WW2's private multiplayer beta detailed
14 August 2017, 11:27 pm

Call of Duty: WW2's private multiplayer beta goes live on 25th August for those who pre-order the game on PS4 and now we know what it includes.

According to developer Sledgehammer Games, this early build will introduce players to the game's two major new features: Divisions and War Mode. The former is a new take on an upgrade system. Rather than opt for previous entries' "Pick 10" Create-a-Class system, Divisions offers five distinct classes: Infantry, Expeditionary, Airborne, Armored, and Mountain Division.

War Mode is a new large scale battle of Axis vs. Allied forces that seems similar to Battlefield 1's objective-based Operations. Co-developed by Raven Software, War Mode's sole beta entry is called Operation Breakout and it's set in St. Lo, France.

The mobile Titanfall RTS is out today
10 August 2017, 3:37 pm

While we wait for another main game in the Titanfall series (Respawn recently said it's working on more Titanfall, so despite lower than expected sales of Titanfall 2, I reckon Titanfall 3 is on the way), there's a mobile Titanfall real-time strategy game to try.

Titanfall: Assault, which is a co-production between Respawn, Nexon and Particle City, is out today on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. You can grab it from the App Store here and Google Play here.

Titanfall: Assault revolves around fast-paced PvP battles. You use a deck of virtual cards to deploy Pilots, Titans and Burn Cards onto the battlefield. The units work as you'd expect: Pilots take on grunts and zip about the map. Titans hold lanes and smash up turrets. And Burn Cards are for support. Hardpoint Domination mode charges you with destroying the enemy base or controlling the map to win.
