Call of Duty: WW2's private multiplayer beta detailed
14 August 2017, 11:27 pm

Call of Duty: WW2's private multiplayer beta goes live on 25th August for those who pre-order the game on PS4 and now we know what it includes.

According to developer Sledgehammer Games, this early build will introduce players to the game's two major new features: Divisions and War Mode. The former is a new take on an upgrade system. Rather than opt for previous entries' "Pick 10" Create-a-Class system, Divisions offers five distinct classes: Infantry, Expeditionary, Airborne, Armored, and Mountain Division.

War Mode is a new large scale battle of Axis vs. Allied forces that seems similar to Battlefield 1's objective-based Operations. Co-developed by Raven Software, War Mode's sole beta entry is called Operation Breakout and it's set in St. Lo, France.

The mobile Titanfall RTS is out today
10 August 2017, 3:37 pm

While we wait for another main game in the Titanfall series (Respawn recently said it's working on more Titanfall, so despite lower than expected sales of Titanfall 2, I reckon Titanfall 3 is on the way), there's a mobile Titanfall real-time strategy game to try.

Titanfall: Assault, which is a co-production between Respawn, Nexon and Particle City, is out today on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. You can grab it from the App Store here and Google Play here.

Titanfall: Assault revolves around fast-paced PvP battles. You use a deck of virtual cards to deploy Pilots, Titans and Burn Cards onto the battlefield. The units work as you'd expect: Pilots take on grunts and zip about the map. Titans hold lanes and smash up turrets. And Burn Cards are for support. Hardpoint Domination mode charges you with destroying the enemy base or controlling the map to win.

Devolver made a Call of Duty documentary called CODumentary
9 August 2017, 9:45 am

Devolver is perhaps best known for publishing edgy indie video games such as Hotline Miami, Not A Hero and Strafe. But it's also dabbled in filmmaking - and it's next project is a pretty surprising one.

Devolver Digital Films has announced a Call of Duty documentary called, wait for it, CODumentary. It's due out 19th September 2017 on VOD platforms worldwide and on the Steam Store.

The 93-minute film, created in the UK by Jonathan Beales, explores how Call of Duty became one of the biggest entertainment franchises ever. Here's the official blurb:

Battlefield 1 gets perks soon
7 August 2017, 11:25 am

The Battlefield series has had perks, or specialisations, for some time. Battlefield 3 and 4 had them, but Battlefield 1 launched without them. Now, 10 months after the game came out, they're about to be slotted into Battlefield 1.

In a post on the Battlefield subreddit, DICE's Jojje "Indigow(n)d" Dalunde said specialisations work differently in Battlefield 1 than they did in previous games. In Battlefield 1, they're broken down into two different variants: generic and kit specific. Every class has access to seven generic specialisations and two kit specific specialisations.

All players start with three specialisations by default: Flak, Cover and Quick Regen. You unlock other perks by completing new service assignments, which are due out as part of the new In the Name of the Tsar expansion. DICE didn't say much about the new service assignments, but the expectation is they will be class-specific challenges.

PlayStation Plus' August freebies include Just Cause 3 and Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry
26 July 2017, 5:40 pm

Sony has announced its August Instant Game Collection, i.e. its line-up of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers coming on 1st August.

The PS4 headliners are Just Cause 3 and Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry. The former open-world adventure we found fun for a whirl, but too repetitive to sustain longterm interest, while our Tom Phillips called the latter, a standalone spin-off of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, a "strong, self-contained narrative" in his review.

Elsewhere, there's the PS4 party game That's You, a title that uses the PlayLink feature wherein players use their mobile phones as controllers and submit photos and doodles to reply to whimsical prompts.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands' 4v4 PvP mode coming autumn, open beta this summer
21 July 2017, 4:28 pm

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands is finally getting a player-versus-player mode, called Ghost War. It's scheduled to launch in full this autumn after beta this summer.

Ghost War is a four-versus-four fight, one team against another, in classic Ghost Recon style.

"Teams will choose from a roster of varied classes that fill specific roles on the battlefield, as they navigate large-scale, open maps and take down their enemies," says Ubisoft. "Ghost War will also integrate new PvP mechanics, including suppressing fire and sound markers, to create a true military strategic, team-based multiplayer mode."

Call of Duty: WW2 reveals Nazi Zombies co-op mode
20 July 2017, 9:10 pm

Call of Duty: WW2's Nazi zombies co-op mode has been officially unveiled. It's simply called Nazi Zombies.

Set in a Bavarian village in Mittelburg, Germany, Nazi Zombies will look rather familiar to those who played the zombie-based co-op campaigns in previous Call of Duty games. The World War 2 setting is different, however, looking a lot more like something out of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

The co-op mode will star David Tennant (Doctor Who), Elodie Yung (Daredevil), Katheryn Winnick (Vikings), Udo Kier (Melancholia) and Ving Rhames (Dawn of the Dead), each of whom's likeness will be captured in the game.

Destiny 2 map returns to a familiar Destiny location
14 July 2017, 4:21 pm

Destiny 2 looks like it'll suck up at least as many hundreds of hours of my life as the original game, but on its reveal fans were divided on whether it looked too similar to Destiny 1.

The latest reveal of a new Crucible map, for the game's player-versus-player section, doesn't really help things - it's a rejigged version of Felwinter Peak, a location featured in 2016's solid but not stellar expansion Rise of Iron.

Specifically, you fight in the area visible across from Rise of Iron's Iron Temple hub - the area which eventually opened up for Iron Banner events, or accessible if you got a token from the Rise of Iron raid.

Gran Turismo Sport gets a new (and final) release date
13 July 2017, 4:00 pm

Gran Turismo Sport has a new release date, and this one's for keeps. Maybe.

Originally planned for release last November, the series has since stuck to its traditional penchant for delays, being pushed back to this year. And now we have a day - October 18th - when we can play developer Polyphony Digital's PS4 debut.

Gran Turismo Sport debuted last May, and didn't look too impressive upon its reveal. Great strides have been made since, with a closed beta showing how much progress has been made, and the fresh emphasis placed on online racing could well help give the series a refresh. Will it be enough to see off competition from Project Cars 2 and Forza Motorsport 7, both of which are also releasing later this year? Only time will tell.

The week Activision sells Modern Warfare Remastered standalone, it puts COD: Ghosts on Xbox One back compat
30 June 2017, 9:50 am

Call of Duty Ghosts on Xbox 360 is now playable via Xbox One, thanks to the console's backwards compatibility programme.

The timing of its addition is interesting - Activision has just this week started selling Modern Warfare Remastered standalone for 34.99, after previously only including it in the pricy Legacy edition of Infinite Warfare.

Ghosts was far less popular than Modern Warfare, however - it's unlikely it will see its own Remastered-style re-release.

Don't trade in your Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition just yet
29 June 2017, 2:13 pm

Activision released Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered standalone this week, but you still need the Infinite Warfare disc to play if you got yours through the expensive versions of the game.

As players have discovered - and Activision has now confirmed - if your version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered was included in the Legacy or Legacy Pro Edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, you still need to have Infinite Warfare installed and use the game disc to play Modern Warfare Remastered.

Similarly, if your version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered was included in the Digital Legacy or Digital Deluxe Edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, you still need to have Infinite Warfare installed to play Modern Warfare Remastered.
